Delete Your Account

Hilltops is operated by HILLTOPS APP PTY LTD (ACN 698 610 007). You can delete your account and the data associated with it at any time, using either of the two methods below.

Option 1 — Delete from inside the Hilltops app

The fastest way to delete your account is from inside the app. The deletion is processed immediately when you confirm.

  1. Open the Hilltops app and sign in
  2. Tap your profile photo to open Settings
  3. Tap Account
  4. Scroll to the Danger Zone section
  5. Tap Delete Account and confirm

You will be signed out and your account will be removed from our servers within seconds.

Option 2 — Request deletion by email

If you can't access the app — for example, you've lost the phone number associated with your account — email support@hilltops.app from the email address or phone number you registered with. Please include:

  • Your registered phone number (or email address)
  • Your display name
  • The subject line: "Delete my Hilltops account"

We'll verify your identity and process the deletion within 7 business days.

What gets deleted, anonymised, or retained

Deleted immediately

The following data is permanently deleted at the moment you confirm:

  • Your profile (name, date of birth, photos, prompt responses, interests, biography)
  • Your authentication credentials (phone number and email)
  • Your push-notification device tokens
  • Your notification preferences and notification history
  • Your saved rooms, muted rooms, and muted conversations
  • Your blocks (in both directions)
  • Your photos in our storage (profile photos and any room cover images for rooms you host)
  • Direct messages you sent in one-on-one conversations

Anonymised, not deleted

Messages you sent in group chats and room chats are retained so other members keep the conversation context. Your name and avatar are replaced with "[Deleted User]". This is the same approach taken by most modern messaging apps and is required to preserve the integrity of conversations for other participants.

Transferred to another member

Rooms you host are transferred to the next eligible member so the room continues for everyone who has joined. If no other eligible member is available, the room is closed.

Retained for legal or operational reasons

A limited set of data may be retained after deletion. We disclose this here so you know exactly what to expect:

  • Encrypted database backups — your data may persist in our rolling backup window for up to 30 days before being overwritten in the normal backup-rotation cycle
  • Aggregated, de-identified analytics that cannot be linked back to you — retained indefinitely for product analytics and service-quality monitoring
  • Google Play and Apple App Store transaction records for any subscriptions you purchased — retained for 7 years to meet Australian Taxation Office record-keeping obligations under the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 (Cth)
  • Content reports filed against you, if any — retained for up to 12 months to protect other users; identifying fields are hashed after month 3

Re-registration

You can register again with the same phone number or email address after deletion. It will be a fresh account with no link to your prior data, badges, friends, or rooms.

Delete specific data without deleting your account

Hilltops does not currently offer a way to selectively delete specific data while keeping your account active. If you want to remove specific items — for example, a photo or a message — you can do so from within the app:

  • Photos: Settings → Edit Profile → tap a photo → Remove
  • Messages: Long-press a message you sent → Delete
  • Rooms you host: Open the room → Manage → Cancel Room, or Delete

If the data you want to delete cannot be removed in-app, please email support@hilltops.app and we'll help.
